One Wall Apartment, Berlin | Germany

One wall that can do everything – that was the basic idea for the conversion of an attic apartment in Berlin-Charlottenburg. The apartment that had previously been divided into small parts with an inefficient ground plan and poor lighting was converted into a functional apartment for frequent visits to the capital by the new owner by the planners Antoan Antonov and Amer Eid, founders of AA+ in Berlin. To use the area of only 45 m² in the best way possible, all non-load-bearing walls were removed so that the now open ground plan with room zones transitioning into each other makes modern living possible.

The only remaining wall of the "One Wall Apartment" became a true all-rounder. It is now a firewall, support, multifunctional furniture and a space-forming agent between the living zones all at the same time. It combines an alcove seat and dressing area in the entrance with a specially produced fitted kitchen and an art corner in the living area. At the end is a ceiling-height mirrored wall unit that underlines the generosity of the newly created arrangement. The wall creates a lot of storage space and flexibility for the individual requirements of the user in all functional zones. To spatially define the sleeping area on the other side, sliding glass elements were used that do not disrupt the desired openness visually even when closed.

All details and materials are elegant but remain discretely in the background. The colour range is characterised by a high-quality wooden parquet floor, mint-green kitchen cabinet fronts and accents in gold and brass. The modern smart home F 40 and F 50 room controller electrical operating elements and sockets in the LS ZERO design were installed flush in the walls and in the marble panel in the kitchen. The glossy gold of the brass of the switches and sockets enters a design symbiosis with the profiles of the windows and sliding elements and with the luminaires, the taps and the doors of the wall cupboards in the kitchen.

"The open ground plan maximises the free space and the light and arranges the spaces elegantly in a practical sequence. The wall is not only structurally supportive, but also offers functionality and interacts with the bordering spaces" explain the planners. Who continue: "The gaze wanders along the wall and is not distracted by walls and distributed elements. The whole apartment is characterised by minimalism. To this end, a material palette was developed that is harmoniously matched to each other in the finest detail: door handles, cupboard knobs, light switches and, yes, even the toilet paper holder are integrated flush, so that the walls are clear and the spaces free from projecting details."

A prestigious interior derives its appeal from exclusive effects. The design switches in high-grade metal versions satisfy this standard outstandingly well. Cool stainless steel, aluminium or attractive anthracite, chrome or precious gold plating – they lend a special touch wherever the emphasis is on the extra-special. Two variations of genuine brass complement the portfolio: Classic with a bright, softly polished finish, antique suitable for traditional interiors.
