Sustainable thinking and action

Climate protection and resource conservation are some of the greatest challenges of our time. At JUNG, sustainable action has been part of the company philosophy all along. Because what could be more sustainable than a product that invokes the actual meaning of the word – "sustain“ in the sense of continuously existing. As a manufacturer, we can only meet our responsibility for the environment and for the building culture as a result of robust, long-lasting and sustainably produced components. We at JUNG think in terms of generations instead of short-term successes - and have done so for more than a century.

JUNG publishes first sustainability report

JUNG has been thinking and acting sustainably since the company was founded in 1912. We take responsibility for our employees, for our environment and for future generations. Our first sustainability report shows how JUNG implemented its sustainability strategy in 2021/2022 and defines targets against which we can continue to be measured in the future.

Cradle to Cradle: a cycle where nothing is lost

The idea of circular products brings climate and resource protection together and represents an important contribution for more sustainability in the building industry. For this reason, we have subjected the most-used inserts and switch ranges for conventional and smart building technology to a comprehensive Cradle-to-Cradle certification.
Cradle to Cradle Certified® is the international standard for sustainable, circular-ready and responsible products. As the name Cradle to Cradle implies, the process involves investigating the entire value-added chain to ensure that the products have no negative influence on people and the environment in their complete product lifecycle. Evidenced by the C2C Material Health certification, no environmentally damaging chemicals are used in the products. All certified JUNG ranges are produced using renewable energy, can be separated into material types and in this way can be added to the recycling cycle.
All materials used can either be returned to the biological cycle after use or remain in a technical cycle permanently through recycling and reuse.
The LS 990, AS 500, A 550, A FLOW and A CREATION ranges have been awarded the Cradle to Cradle (C2C) and Material Health certificates after a rigorous testing process.
Cradle to Cradle Certified® Bronze for numerous products including extremely difficult KNX sensors in the LS, AS and A ranges.
Over 100 individual products from switches to push- buttons, from frames to inserts and classic sockets, the latter with USB sockets or Safety Plus insert, from centre plates to complete modules all received the coveted distinction. In the process, a particular challenge was the certification of the complete KNX modules such as the push-button module or the room controller display module with all their small parts and difficult technology. The certification of the JUNG KNX sensors and the KNX automatic switches with the BRONZE status is a great success for the industry. We have achieved this as the worldwide sole manufacturer.

Switches and sockets in recyclate

In production we have relied on recycled plastic for many years. The A CREATION, A 550, A CUBE and A FLOW switch ranges in matt anthracite already consist of 95 % resource-saving recyclate. In this way, we contribute to reducing the environmental burden of plastic waste.
The recyclate is a material that is obtained from preparing and recycling plastic waste. In the recycling process, residues are collected, sorted, cleaned and then mechanically broken up. This material is then melted and processed in an extrusion process (press method) into recyclate, as described in DIN ISO 14021.
Plastic design covers and design frames in 95 % recyclate in accordance with DIN EN ISO 14021 are sustainable and resource-saving. For the manufacturing process, hydroelectric energy is used in order to consistently produce sustainably. The frames, light switches, push-buttons, rotary dimmers and sockets produced in this way cover a large range of use possibilities. With these products, it is possible to implement a resource-saving electrical installation. After the Cradle-to-Cradle certification of various switch ranges and KNX components, these ranges in recyclate are a further consistent step towards promoting a circular economy.

Create solutions

Continuous research and development
Construction is developing continuously in accordance with the zeitgeist and technological developments. We see it as our responsibility at JUNG to not only go along with this development, but also to positively influence it. This is why JUNG has been investing in research and development for decades. Product development focuses on durable devices for efficient building technology and the integration of new technologies into JUNG systems with the goal of optimising the energy-saving potential with smart technical building equipment. For example, in addition to convenient ways of controlling light and heat, the smart home technology provides great potential for effectively reducing energy requirements and thus CO2 emissions. In this way, it is not only about creating the perfect building parameters but also promoting correct handling of the systems with a use-oriented building technology. We consider it our task to develop systems, products and solutions that not only meet the technical demands but also particularly take account of human behaviour.
Resource-optimised products
JUNG solutions and systems need to be not only efficient and long-lasting in use, but also resource and environmentally friendly in production. An example is the development of plug-in components for serial rooms with uniform equipment, such as those found in hotels, offices or public housing. The saving potential of plug + go is enormous: 70% shorter cable lengths and 50% less copper consumption are just two of the many positive aspects of this product development.
Logistics of short distances
Due to production exclusively in Germany, JUNG relies on the principle of short distances and environmentally friendly procurement and logistics. JUNG has a regional network of specialised suppliers and Germany-wide storage at representatives. Completely automated order picking, material-saving packaging and optimised logistics ensure that the goods are at the right place at the right time and thus noticeably reduce the volume of transport and the number of shipments.
Energy-efficient production
JUNG continuously invests in the energy efficiency of the production facilities and buildings. Alongside a modern combined heat and power plant for economic production of heat and electricity, and daylight-dependent brightness regulation, energy-saving LED lighting technology with DALI makes it possible to optimise the energy consumption. An in-house energy monitoring system and regular energy audits carried out by independent experts show further potential savings, which are continuously implemented.
Intelligent packaging management
A large proportion of the packaging uses recycled waste-paper. Up to 100% of this can be recycled. JUNG packaging is, where possible, wrapped, and only glued in positions that are subject to particular loads. Intelligent packaging management makes it possible to optimally load cartons and pallets with different pack sizes and in this way to avoid filling materials and additional packaging. JUNG participates in the Interseroh and Resy return systems.

Use knowledge, share experience

JUNG is involved in various committees and universities to promote future-oriented product development.
DGNB - network for sustainable building
JUNG has been a member of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen (DGNB) (German Sustainable Building Council) since January 2009. With our expertise in all aspects of modern building control, we actively participate in the various committees of the DGNB. Together with other manufacturers, architects and planners, JUNG contributes to the development and implementation of sustainable building culture in Germany.
Innovative through research
Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft e.V. is one of the largest private promoters of education, science and innovation in Germany. With the "Innovative through Research" seal, it acknowledges the special responsibility that research-driven companies assume for the state and society.
