Library, Červený Kostelec | Czech Republic

At the Břetislav Kafka Library in Červený Kostelec, Czech Republic, historic building fabric and contemporary library architecture come together in a compelling fusion. Following a comprehensive refurbishment by the architectural practice Papundekl Architects, the former inn now serves as an open space for socialising, learning and culture.

In doing so, the existing building structure was deliberately preserved and further developed through a clear, flexible interior design concept. The result is a library that preserves the character of the historic building whilst meeting the requirements of a modern public facility. The entrance area alone opens the building up to the city: generous glazing provides views into the interior, whilst new gateways allow access to the tranquil inner courtyard. Inside, bespoke built-in furniture along the walls provides guidance and order. At the heart of the space are mobile shelving units, seating and reading areas on castors, which can be flexibly adapted to different uses – from focused reading to lectures or events. The children’s area is particularly lively.

Shelves of varying heights, versatile play and reading areas, and a large-scale textile artwork by the artist Linda Retterová – created in collaboration with children – create a playful atmosphere whilst also improving the room’s acoustics. A defining design element is the carefully coordinated palette of materials and colours. Warm rosé and terracotta tones lend the floors and furniture a welcoming feel and allude to the town’s name and its striking red church. Light-coloured walls, grey built-in furniture and elegant stainless steel surfaces provide a calm contrast and emphasise the clarity of the architecture. The interplay of historic building elements, modern fixtures and carefully placed colour accents creates an atmosphere that conveys openness, tranquillity and a sense of well-being. The LS 990 series of switches in aluminium emphasises the timeless understated style and blends harmoniously into the library’s minimalist design concept.

The design switches in high-grade metal versions satisfy this standard outstandingly well. Cool stainless steel, aluminium or attractive anthracite, chrome or precious gold plating – they lend a special touch wherever the emphasis is on the extra-special. Two variations of genuine brass complement the portfolio: Classic with a bright, softly polished finish, antique suitable for traditional interiors.
