w∞d.ii - Mobile learning space and materials lab | Germany

With w∞d.ii , WoodenValley gGmbH has developed a mobile learning space which is designed as a transportable wooden module. The building can be temporarily used in different locations and creates an independent space for supplementary educational opportunities and workshops in which children, young people and adults can undergo participative, experience-based and self-directed learning.

The modular building has a wooden construction. The construction, extension and finishes mesh together and bring the material to life both technically and atmospherically. Outwardly, the module is presented as a simple volume with precisely joined wooden facades. The dimensions and the aerodynamically optimised shape of w∞d.ii are designed for street traffic. Rounded corners as well as the sloping roof improve the air flow characteristics during transport.

The interior space is characterised by visible wooden surfaces, spacious window openings and flexible furniture. Natural materials, wood in the walls, ceilings and furniture dominate as well as loam for heating elements. The furniture is designed to be functional and versatile with integrated storage for work materials and technical components such as batteries, switch cabinet and power inverter. There is no permanent water supply; collected rainwater is used instead to make water cycles visible and traceable - via an integrated plant-based purification plant which makes the handling of resources immediately tangible. All the materials were not only investigated creatively but also as regards manufacturing energy, CO₂ footprint, environmental policy of the manufacturers, proportion of recycled materials, certification and possible product as service models. Preference was given to using materials that were naturally obtained, recycled, produced under climate-friendly conditions and sourced as locally as possible.

A defining element of the interior is the visible electrical installation. The cables are deliberately mounted in trunking on the walls, flexibly accessible and part of the didactic concept, symbolised by the surface-mounted housing A CUBE. A matt anthracite finish was selected for all the switches and sockets of the A CUBE and A 550 ranges. The material consists of 95% recycled plastic waste. The anthracite-coloured surface forms a clear contrast to the warm wooden tones. In addition, JUNG HOME smart technology is used. JUNG HOME is based on the conventional 230 volt installation and can be combined with classical systems. The JUNG HOME SCHUKO® socket Energy enables the energy consumption to be read and controlled via an app.

w∞d.ii is continually being developed. New materials and constructive solutions are regularly integrated and tested on the spot. The mobile learning space is thus not only a place for exchanging knowledge but also a real-life test site for future-oriented construction.
