Apartment Øki, Madrid | Spain

With the desire to convert the family home Las Aguilas in the La Latina district into a mixed use of private home and office, the owner of the apartment turned to elii architects. The house from the 1970s mirrors the typical pattern of its time. The new design of the house is more than an interior design project. The process is viewed by the architects as a kind of catalyst for the benefit of a future for the new stage of life.

The first step consists of reprogramming the existing apartment. The centrepiece is the open, central space in the form of a semi-circle around which the other rooms are grouped. This leads to a flexible structural layout that promotes mutual relationships and interaction, shortens distances and extends the possibilities of the space. The cooking area, sleeping area and the office are arranged around the circle segment. The latter rooms are separated by fitted furniture that provides storage space. A bathroom concealed behind a hidden door completes the functions. The geometry, the dimension of the background and the position of the openings make it possible to transform the living space in the semi-circle into a photo studio: the curve is provided with vertical wooden elements that play with the optics and the colours and create a dynamic effect of vibration and depth at this special location. Furthermore, the space can be openly programmed for different living situations, such as quiet zone via the sofa area or for the nightly DJ session via the niche for the record player and the record collection. A folding, sliding design enables the facade to be opened and allows the inside to flow into the outside.

Depending on perspective, the materials and structures overlap each other to provide a constantly new picture. Mirrored surfaces strengthen the impression of unending room depth. The JUNG LS 990 switch icon in white and black blends harmoniously into the artistically architectural design program and provides subtle accents.
