HOUSE EUROPE!
On 17 October 2024, the JUNG Architecture Talks took place for the first time at Tempelhof Airport in Berlin. The event was dedicated to the European citizens' initiative HouseEurope!. In addition to the initiators of HouseEurope!, guests included the Pritzker Prize and EUmies Award-winning architecture firm Lacaton & Vassal, the President of the Architecture Council Europe (ACE-CAE), Ruth Schagemann, and the Federal Director of Deutsche Umwelthilfe, Barbara Metz.
Together with the initiators and partners of the HouseEurope!, innovative concepts for renovation instead of demolition and sensible legislative changes at EU level were discussed. Tempelhof Airport, a symbol of Berlin's history and transformation, provided the ideal setting to highlight the role of architecture and urban planning in this European context.
The event included a screening of the film 'The Demolition Drama', which explores the challenges of demolition for new construction and the importance of redevelopment strategies. The panel discussed the steps needed in the construction industry, politics, society and especially EU legislation to promote climate protection and sustainable development. The aim of the event was to promote a fruitful dialogue and to highlight concrete approaches that call for action and strengthen a sustainable European building culture.
The evening was moderated by Ivan Blasi, curator of the EU Mies Awards.

They founded Lacaton & Vassal in Paris in 1987, and since then their designs for new buildings and transformative projects have repeatedly demonstrated the courage to leave the old behind. With their unconventional approach and commitment to sustainability, Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal have taken the architectural world by storm. Their buildings and renovation projects are not only functional and aesthetically pleasing, but also focus on social responsibility and the human experience. In 2021, Lacaton and Vassal were honoured with the Pritzker Architecture Prize for their work.

RUTH SCHAGEMANN
ARCHITECT'S COUNCIL OF EUROPE
Ruth Schagemann (born 1974) is an architect and studied architecture at the University of Braunschweig and the University of Stuttgart. In 2006 she and her husband founded the architectural practice VICEVERSA Architektur und Medien. She was a member of the Executive Committee of ACE, Architects' Council of Europe (2016 to 2021), coordinator of the European Network of Architects' Competent Authorities (ENACA), member of the European Coordination Group of the German Federal Chamber of Architects, and is Head of division for national and international professional policy at the Baden-Württemberg Chamber of Architects. She has been President of the Architects' Council of Europe (ACE) since January 2022.

BARBARA METZ
DEUTSCHE UMWELTHILFE
Barbara Metz (born 1981) has been managing director of Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) since March 2022. Metz began her career at the environmental and consumer protection organisation in 2007. Initially as an advisor to the Federal Managing Director and in her role as Deputy Head of the Transport and Air Pollution Department, her work focused on CO2 reduction in road transport at a national and European level. In 2014, Metz established the Energy Efficiency Team at DUH, focusing on climate protection in the building sector. On 1 January 2017, Metz was appointed Deputy Federal Managing Director. Barbara Metz has a degree in Political Science and Sociology from the University of Konstanz.

MODERATION
Ivan Blasi, architect, is the director of programs at Fundació Mies van der Rohe in Barcelona. He is in charge of the organization of the EUmies Awards with the support of the European Union and the interventions in the Barcelona Pavilion originally built by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich. He teaches at the Barcelona Architecture Center and has lectured worldwide.
