THE NEW HOUSING QUESTION | A way out of the crisis?
On 16 October 2025, the JUNG Architecture Talks took place in the city of Hamburg for the 17th time. The evening at the Freie Akademie der Künste was held under the motto The New Housing Question. This year’s guests included Sascha Zander and Christian Roth from the Berlin-based architecture office zanderroth, Lisa Yamaguchi from the Munich office dreisterneplus, and Hans Drexler from DGJ Architektur in Frankfurt. In front of a fully booked audience, we discussed possible ways out of the current housing crisis in Germany.

The evening was moderated by Jan Friedrich, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Bauwelt magazine.

SASCHA ZANDER & CHRISTIAN ROTH

ZANDERROTH, BERLIN
zanderroth was founded in 1999 by Sascha Zander and Christian Roth in Berlin and has since been developing residential buildings of all scales – from perimeter block developments to housing estates and urban extensions. The office became known for its architecturally sophisticated and innovative housing projects in Berlin. Along the way, the team realised that achieving optimal results requires an understanding of the entire value chain of a property. That’s why, alongside liveability, quality, and sustainability at every scale, feasibility and financing are equally central to zanderroth’s work.

“Anyone interested in ambitious contemporary housing in Germany today cannot overlook zanderroth.” (Andreas Ruby)

LISA YAMAGUCHI

DREISTERNEPLUS, MUNICH
Lisa Yamaguchi is an architect based in Munich, where she leads the architecture office dreisterneplus with her partners. After graduating from the University of Karlsruhe in 2004, she worked at Janson + Wolfrum Architektur und Stadtplanung in Munich and, from 2006, at Meili, Peter – today known as dreisterneplus. She has been involved in teaching since 2011. From 2023 to 2025, she held a professorship in Integral Architecture at Graz University of Technology. Since 2025, she has been Professor of Design and Construction at the OTH Regensburg.

“Everything changes and everything stays the same. With each new project, we must once again explore and define the relationship between open and closed, public and private spaces in a responsible way. We create threshold spaces and transitions that reflect the ambivalent needs of people. In doing so, we draw on the rich repertoire of architectural history and carry it forward.”

HANS DREXLER

DGJ ARCHITEKTUR, FRANKFURT AM MAIN
Hans Drexler studied architecture at the Technical University of Darmstadt, the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main, and the ETH Zurich, where he completed his diploma thesis in 1998. In 1999, he co-founded DGJ Architektur GmbH in Frankfurt am Main with two partners. The office focuses on sustainable, energy-efficient architecture and designs buildings to the highest standards in architecture, detail, and environmental performance. In addition to sustainable design and construction, Drexler’s work includes research into sustainable architecture, resource sufficiency, and innovative timber construction. In summer 2024, Hans Drexler was appointed full professor at the University of Siegen.

“The social dimension plays a vital role in the sustainability of buildings. I see the creation of affordable housing as an architectural responsibility toward society. Buildings must be valued by their occupants and meet their needs to ensure long-term durability. That’s why we work with participatory planning and building processes to develop new housing concepts and innovative ideas.”
