20 Years of HÄUSER AWARD
On 13 April 2023, the JUNG Elbgespräche celebrated the anniversary of the HÄUSER AWARD and invited guests to the Business Club Hamburg. The motto of the evening was The best family homes. On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, the competition, which is held annually by the magazine HÄUSER, was deliberately opened up to all types and typologies of private living without any thematic restrictions. The entire spectrum of current developments and trends was to be illuminated. Our building and living have changed greatly in recent years and decades and will continue to face new challenges in the future: Climate change and scarcity of resources as well as social and demographic changes require a rethink.
The search was for the best single-family homes that deal with the issues of the present, but also look ahead to the future. Whether it’s a new building, conversion or change of use, whether in the city or in the countryside, whether it’s intelligent energy concepts, innovative construction methods or environmentally friendly materials, space-saving construction or flexible floor plans: At the award ceremony,particularly successful, cleverly planned and creatively sophisticated houses were honoured, proving that exemplary and architecturally outstanding solutions can be found for private living time and again.
The award winners Thomas Kröger from Berlin, Till Robin Kurz from Cologne, Armin and Alexander Pedevilla from Bruneck (IT), Florian Voigt from Leipzig, Tom Verschueren and David Driesen from Mechelen (BE) spoke.
The evening was moderated by Anne Zuber, Editor-in-Chief of HÄUSER and Dr. Ansgar Steinhausen, Head of Department “Architecture” of HÄUSER.

THOMAS KRÖGER
THOMAS KRÖGER ARCHITECTS, BERLIN
Thomas Kröger founded his office in Berlin in 2001 after working for Norman Foster, London and Max Dudler, Berlin. Since then, he and his team have been working with builders in Germany and abroad. He is a member of the BDA. From 2011 to 2013, Kröger taught as a visiting professor at the Department of Architecture at Northeastern University of Boston as part of the Berlin study program. In 2014 he held a visiting professorship at the Stuttgart University of Technology. Since the summer semester of 2019, he has been a professor of architecture at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.
TILL ROBIN KURZ
TILL ROBIN KURZ ARCHITECT, COLOGNE
Till Robin Kurz founded his architectural firm in Cologne in 2014. He studied architecture at the University of Applied Sciences Cologne. During his studies he worked at ASTOC Architects and Planners and USARCH. After completing his diploma, he was employed by USARCH from 2003 to 2013 as project manager. From 2018 to 2020 he held a teaching position at the TH Köln. In 2022 Kurz was appointed to the BDA.
ARMIN UND ALEXANDER PEDEVILLA
PEDEVILLA, BRUNECK (IT)
Armin and Alexander Pedevilla studied architecture at the Technical University in Graz. Both established their own office in Austria independently of each other after their studies. In 2005 the brothers returned to South Tyrol to jointly found the office pedevilla architects.
For pedevilla architects, building is a conscious approach to social, cultural, economic and ecological components of everyday life. The integration of a building into existing local structures plays a role, as does the approach to the respective temperature and climate influences. In this context, consistency becomes an important factor in planning decisions.

DAVID DRIESEN & TOM VERSCHUEREN
DMVA, MECHELEN (BE)
Tom Verschueren studied architecture in Antwerp and completed postgraduate studies in urban planning and preservation. In 1997, together with David Driesen, he founded the dmvA architecten office.
David Driesen studied architecture in Brussels and completed a postgraduate degree in urban planning and preservation in Antwerp, where he met Tom Verschueren. Since 2011, David Driesen has been teaching architectural design at KU Leuven.
The shared passion of David Driesen and Tom Verschueren for architecture led to the foundation of dmvA, 'door middel van Architectuur' (by means of architecture). An important goal, namely to provide a critical response to social, economic and collective questions with the help of architecture. dmvA likes to act as a screenwriter: they turn a plan into a scenario, spaces into sequences and buildings into storytellers. They are always looking for a unique solution that takes into account the wishes of the customer and the needs of the place.

FLORIAN VOIGT
VOIGT OFFICE, LEIPZIG
Florian Voigt has been running the Voigt office together with his brother Tobias Voigt since 2018. He completed his architectural studies at the Bauhaus University Weimar in 2011. Already during his studies he worked at Schneider+Schumacher Architekten in Frankfurt am Main and Herzog & de Meuron Architekten in Hamburg. After the diploma followed the cooperation with Springer Architekten in Berlin, Miller & Maranta Architekten in Basel and GayMenzel Architectes in Monthey. In 2019 Florian Voigt was also a research assistant at Prof. Jörg Springer at the Baukunst Chair of the Bauhaus University Weimar.
