Holzhaus Buggi 52, Freiburg | Germany

In 2021 in Freiburg, an 8-storey residential and business building with day nursery was built in a wooden design. The impressive structure, whose height of 21.98 metres is only slightly below the high-rise threshold, was built by Weissenrieder Architekten BDA in cooperation with the city of Freiburg for IG Klösterle GbR, the former owners of an old supermarket on the plot. The special thing about the almost tower-block is that above the 1st floor it is built as a purely wooden construction. Over seven floors, Holzbau Bruno Kaiser GmbH combined solid wooden construction, wood frame construction and a wooden facade with wood fibre insulating board in the wall structure. Even the lift shaft and the stairwell are made of wood. In order to still be able to keep the material use low, the load-bearing structures were produced in the economical panel construction method. In addition, the wood frame construction was combined with an optimised cross-laminated timber, rib-element construction. The wood largely originates from the region. Buggi 52 meets the energy efficiency house standard KFW 55 and is the first FSC-certified building in Germany.

The new residential and business building on Bugginger Straße provides new sales areas for the supermarket in the base zone and also offers space for 30 apartments of differing sizes, including for people from the high-need register of the city of Freiburg and for assisted living groups. The flat roof of the supermarket also serves as a free area and play area for a children's day nursery on the first floor. Alongside the social importance for the city of Freiburg, Buggi 52 particularly stands out due to its resource-friendly building method. During the development, the project management company Sutter3 GmbH & Co. KG and Holzbau Bruno Kaiser GmbH were integrated in good time into the planning. The project was supported by the Wood Innovation Programme. A high degree of pre-fabrication with a fast building time, as well as the use of environmental materials and natural surfaces make the advantages of the consistent wooden building method clear.

The apartments are naturally also strongly characterised inside by the wood material. For the ceilings, the planners from Weissenrieder Architekten BDA chose a domestic silver fir. Despite the complete wood building method with visible wooden ceilings, all fire protection requirements are met. The electrical equipment for the apartments used the AS 500 range from JUNG in white. The range stands for function and functionality and is thus ideally suited to the reduced, simple design of the property.

Buggi 52 is a flagship project – for wooden construction and cooperative building. It is forward-looking from a structural, environmental and social perspective, everyone is agreed about that. The project has correctly been awarded the wooden construction prize for Baden-Württemberg 2022, the Freiburg wooden construction prize and the distinction "Exemplary Building" from the Architectural Association of Baden-Württemberg.

AS 500

The standard when it comes to form and function The AS 500 range forms a harmonious unit in terms of form and function. The lines run smoothly and harmoniously, and the angle in the rocker area creates a visual accent. All the frames and covers have uniform styling in the colours ivory and white. The wide variety on this range allows it to be used in demanding electrical installations as well.
