Digital Addressable Lighting Interface
DALI is a standardised interface for electronic control and evaluation of lighting. DALI can be used in a variety of ways and in many areas of public life it is already standard.
Individual luminaires or complete lighting groups, light colour control, dimming of the light or switching of alternate light scenarios: where the maximum numbers are involved, DALI-2 individually controls up to 64 luminaires. These can optionally be combined into up to 16 groups. DALI can be integrated into a building system using interfaces.
DALI-2 is the latest version of the DALI standard and offers improved functionality compared to its predecessor. Whereas with DALI the functionality and interoperability between devices was often limited, DALI-2 makes combining devices from different manufacturers easier. Furthermore, DALI-2 is backwards compatible with DALI. This makes a migration to the new version easier. Additionally, DALI-2 offers higher flexibility, energy efficiency and improved user convenience when controlling lighting systems.
Tunable white
Tunable white (TW) allows the dynamic adjustment of the colour temperature from warm via neutral to cool white (daylight white).
The human body is adapted to the natural rhythm of the light during the day. As a result, we react to blue light with increased activity while a warm light initiates a calm phase. With tunable white, the light moves below a maximum limit. This lies between 2,000 and 10,000 Kelvin (depending on the colour temperature range of the lamp).
Control DALI-2 manually and based on need
The Power DALI controllers for manual operation of luminaires with DALI-2 interface: the operation is according to the familiar principles. With these, you can adapt the colour temperature in addition (tunable white).
Switching, dimming, setting colour temperature: the DALI control units enable all of this with compatible lamps for up to 28 DALI-2 devices. The use of this technology is preferred in commercial properties such as offices. The regular centre plates for rotary dimmers fit on the DALI rotary controllers in the design of the AS, A, CD and LS ranges.
The advantages at a glance
- Atmospheric light: colour temperature control (tunable white)
- Control of lamps of DALI-2 device type 8 for tunable white in accordance with IEC 62386-209
- intuitive operation
- easy retrofitting
- Power supply from the DALI-2 bus and power supply of up to 28 DALI-2 devices
- uniform look in the switch design
- available as rotary or push-button controller
Smart lighting saves energy
DALI-2 is used in detached homes and apartments to control the lighting and save energy. DALI-2 compatible LED luminaires can for example be installed in living rooms to adapt the lighting to the needs of the occupants. Unnecessary energy consumption can thus be avoided through the precise control of the lighting.
One of the main functions of DALI-2 is the continuous dimming of LED luminaires. The adaptation of the brightness to the actual requirements of the users prevents unnecessary energy consumption. Moreover DALI-2 supports presence and movement detection so that the lighting is automatically switched on and off when people move inside a room or exit it.
Single- or multimaster?
If you need a simple DALI lighting control system and want to control all the luminaires centrally from one point, a singlemaster system is perfectly adequate. For larger DALI lighting systems with several control units or if different areas are to be controlled independently of each other, a multimaster system is recommended. We offer the appropriate products for both solutions.
Singlemaster
In a single-master system, a single rotary controller takes over operation and acts as the "master", sending all commands to the DALI luminaires. Changes can be transmitted directly to all the luminaires via this central control. The configuration of a single master system is usually simpler as there is only one central control unit, which simplifies operation.
multi-master
Several control devices and gateways can be actived simultaneously in a multi-master system. Each of these devices can act as a "master" and send commands to the luminaire. Multiple masters enable to control different areas of a lighting system independently of each other. Multi-master systems offer greater flexibility as they have several control points. During installation, care must be taken to avoid conflicts (e.g. addressing errors, priority conflicts) between the individual masters.

Smart lighting control with DALI-2 and KNX
Simulate daylight and promote well-being: the KNX DALI-2 gateway Colour forms the interface for controlling DALI-2 luminaires within a Human-Centric Lighting installation with KNX.
Using the KNX DALI-2 gateway Colour, the colour temperature and brightness of LED luminaires can be set independently of each other or combined as desired. In this way, for example, the behaviour of an incandescent lamp can be adjusted by changing the colour temperature to the warmer range when dimming and changing to the cooler range when making brighter.
Simply retrofit DALI-2
The JUNG KNX DALI-2 actuator is suitable for the modernisation of 1-10 volt installations using the existing infrastructure with DALI and KNX Secure. It supports the control of up to 32 ballasts per channel and offers functions such as dimming, Tunable White and RGBW.
The advantages at a glance
- Broadcast communication DT6 & DT8 support (RGBW / TC)
- DALI-2 certification
- DALI multi-master
- KNX Data-Secure
- Parameterisation only via ETS, without Dali commissioning, channel test via manual operation on the device (no DCA)
- Can be updated
- 4 separate DALI outputs per up to 32 ECGs
- DALI power supply in the device
- Additional functions : Time delay, scene, staircase, lock, forced position, switch-on/switch-off behaviour
Lessons are taking place, the room lighting is switched on.
Lessons are over, the room lights are switched off.
The KNX DALI actuator is ideal for repetitive rooms such as classrooms or hotel rooms. The four connections of the DALI actuator can be used, for example, to combine two classrooms with per two individually controllable light fields. The individual control in the classroom is retained. Central control then takes place with the other functions via KNX. For example, the caretaker can use a corresponding visualisation on a tablet to switch the light on centrally before the start of lessons and switch it off again at the end. Errors or faults are also transmitted to KNX via the DALI bus and indicated on the displays so that a fault can be rectified quickly and efficiently.

The advantages at a glance
- New starting from firmware version 01: communicates with the multi-master capable rotary controllers
- Teaching of third-party manufacturer sensors possible
- Broadcast control via KNX communication objects
- Compatible with DALI and DALI-2
- Available in 1-gang and 2-gang versions
- KNX Data Secure
- HCL and CT mode
- Takes over logic function from the devices with KNX Secure
- Commissioning device configuration app (DCA)
The KNX DALI gateway is the ideal solution for a lighting installation with a high degree of customisation. It offers great flexibility, especially in exhibition rooms or museums: basic lighting can be controlled via a group, while individual exhibits can be specifically illuminated with different light colours or brightness levels. This allows certain areas to be emphasised, moods to be created and light to be used in a targeted manner to optimally support the effect of the exhibits.
