In the high-population city of Bangkok, creating a calm oasis for a family is itself a challenge. The architects at Maincourse were successful in this task in a low-stress way with the interior design for a 200 m² terraced house in close cooperation with the clients. Within the limited surface area, the architects are trying to effectively use the space by clearly defining the uses and to particularly accentuate the main living area. As a result, the living and communal areas stretches across two floors as the centre of the house. The generosity of the open-plan living area is complemented by the reduced colour palette, the balance of the simple materials and subtle details in a functional environment.

Along a room edge in an appropriate human scale, a meandering system of specially built furniture elements and veneered wooden surfaces develops to which decorative textures and fine inlays have been added depending on function. The openings such as entrance and frontage are integrated into the room system, as well as the kitchen, whose inner life can remain elegantly hidden behind the closing wooden elements. A restrained material palette in a cream tone and a light wood colour support the calm atmosphere.  The finesse of the material continues in other areas of the house, from the decorative wall surfaces in the hallway to the design of the bedrooms and their furnishings. An interesting aspect is the window seat situated like a photo mount from where alongside the private area in the mezzanine floor it is connected with the living space like a living work of art. The physical and visual views arising as a result create surprising interactions between the users and the rooms.

Although the rooms are designed in a discreet and linear way, every detail and the sequence of the individual materials are harmoniously arranged. Fitting to the palette of colours and shapes, the LS 990 switch range was chosen for switches and temperature regulators, which achieve a highly elegant effect in the matt graphite black version in combination with the light wood panelling.
